Start Here: The Focus Stack in Five Layers

New to biohacking for focus? This is the order that gives the biggest return, from free foundations to the supplements worth paying for.

·6 min read

Most people start biohacking from the wrong end. They buy a nootropic blend before fixing the fact that they sleep six hours, work in a stuffy room and check their phone every four minutes.

The idea behind this site is simple: focus is a stack. Each layer builds on the one beneath it. Get the foundations right and every supplement works better. Skip them and nothing does much.

Here’s the order, with where to go next for each layer.

Layer 1: Sleep

Sleep is the multiplier for everything else. Even modest, repeated sleep restriction measurably impairs attention, and people consistently underestimate how impaired they are. No supplement makes up for it.

Start with: a consistent wake time, daylight in the morning, caffeine finished by early afternoon, and a cool, dark bedroom. Read: Sleep Is the Stack

Layer 2: Light and movement

Bright light in the morning sets your body clock and boosts alertness. Movement does something similar for your brain: even a single short bout of exercise gives a small, measurable lift to attention and executive function.

Start with: ten minutes outside before your first work block; a walk between blocks. Read: Move to Think · Cold, Breath and NSDR

Layer 3: Environment and friction

Your room works on your brain all day. Stale air, dim light and visual clutter all cost focus, and a phone within reach costs more. The trick isn’t willpower. It’s making distraction harder than the work.

Start with: window open, phone in another room, one task on screen. Read: Friction Design · Your Room Is a Supplement · Sound for Focus

Layer 4: Caffeine + L-theanine

Now we’re into supplements, and this is the one to start with. Caffeine is the most reliable focus aid we have. Adding L-theanine smooths out the edges and has been tested alongside caffeine in multiple placebo-controlled trials. It’s also leading a shift in how supplements are taken: the move from capsules to pouches.

Layer 5: Everything else

Creatine, bacopa, rhodiola, omega-3, magnesium and the rest. Some have decent evidence, some are mostly marketing. Add them one at a time, only once the layers above are solid.

Put it together

When you’re ready, the 90-minute protocol combines every layer into one repeatable deep-work session.

One rule for all of it

Change one thing at a time and give it a week or two. Track something simple, like focused hours per day or a 1 to 10 rating per session. Otherwise you’ll never know what actually worked for you.
